Ledger Discovers Hardware Vulnerability in Trezor Safe 7 Wallet
Ledger's security research team, Donjon, uncovered a critical vulnerability in the TROPIC01 secure element chip used in Trezor's Safe 7 hardware wallet. The flaw was identified during an independent audit, leveraging laser fault injection techniques to manipulate the chip's signature verification process. While Trezor maintains that user funds remain secure, the breach highlights ongoing security challenges in crypto storage solutions.
Tropic Square, the chip manufacturer and Trezor's sister company, acknowledged the vulnerability after receiving Donjon's findings in January 2026. Further investigation revealed an additional attack vector compromising PIN protection functions. The incident underscores the competitive yet collaborative nature of security research in the cryptocurrency space, where rivals routinely audit each other's products.
